Hasedera Kamakura

Hasedera, officially known as Hase-dera (長谷寺), is a Buddhist temple located in the city of Kamakura, Kanagawa Prefecture, Japan. The temple is renowned for its beautiful gardens, seasonal flowers, and a massive wooden statue of Kannon, the goddess of mercy. Hasedera is a significant cultural and religious site, attracting visitors for its spiritual ambiance and scenic surroundings.

Key features and aspects of Hasedera include:

  1. Kannon Statue: Hasedera’s main attraction is the massive wooden statue of Kannon, standing at a height of 9.18 meters (about 30 feet). This statue, known as the “Eleven-Faced Kannon,” is considered one of the largest wooden sculptures in Japan. Each of Kannon’s eleven faces represents a different aspect of compassion.
  2. Jizo Statues: The temple grounds are adorned with numerous small Jizo statues. Jizo is a bodhisattva associated with the protection of children, particularly those who have passed away. Visitors often offer small toys, bibs, and other items to these statues in memory of deceased children.
  3. Kyozo (Sutra Archive): Hasedera has a Kyozo, or sutra archive, where Buddhist scriptures are stored. Visitors can purchase small scrolls containing sutras as souvenirs.
  4. Seasonal Gardens: The temple grounds feature well-maintained gardens that change with the seasons. Cherry blossoms in spring and colorful maple leaves in autumn create a picturesque landscape.
  5. Benten-kutsu Cave: Hasedera has a cave known as Benten-kutsu dedicated to Benzaiten, the goddess of music and entertainment. The cave features various statues and religious artifacts.
  6. Sea View: Hasedera offers a panoramic view of the nearby Sagami Bay, enhancing the overall experience for visitors.
  7. Shoro (Bell Tower): The temple’s bell tower, known as Shoro, houses a massive bell. Visitors can ring the bell for a small fee, and it is believed to bring good luck and blessings.
  8. Hasedera Daibutsu: In addition to the main Kannon statue, there is a smaller bronze statue of Amida Buddha, known as the Hasedera Daibutsu, located on the temple grounds.
  9. Goma Fire Rituals: Hasedera holds Goma fire rituals, where wooden sticks inscribed with wishes are burned to send the prayers to the divine realm.

Hasedera is not only a place of worship but also a popular destination for tourists and locals seeking spiritual reflection and appreciation of nature. The combination of religious significance, artistic elements, and natural beauty makes Hasedera a well-rounded cultural experience.
