Amano Iwato Shrine is a Shinto shrine located in the city of Takachiho in Miyazaki Prefecture, Japan. The shrine is closely associated with the myth of Ama-no-Iwato, which is a significant episode in Japanese mythology.
According to the myth, the sun goddess Amaterasu Omikami, angered by the mischievous behavior of her brother Susanoo no Mikoto, hid herself in a cave called Ama-no-Iwato, plunging the world into darkness. The other gods and goddesses tried to lure her out, but she refused to come out of the cave.
In an effort to coax Amaterasu out of the cave, the gods organized a divine party outside the cave entrance. Ame-no-Uzume, the goddess of mirth, performed a lively dance, and the laughter and noise eventually intrigued Amaterasu. When she opened the cave door to see what was happening, the god Ame-no-Tajikarao forcefully pulled her out, and light was restored to the world.
The Amano Iwato Shrine enshrines Ame-no-Iwato no Kami, the deity associated with this myth. The shrine is located near the Amano Iwato River and is set amidst the scenic beauty of Takachiho, making it a popular destination for visitors and pilgrims. The area is also known for its stunning Takachiho Gorge and related natural attractions.
