Kitaguchi Hongu Fuji Sengen Shrine has a history dating back to 100 A.D., initially built to celebrate the visit of Prince Yamato Takeru. It was established in its current location in 788 A.D. to appease the volatile eruptions of Mount Fuji and to worship its goddess, Konohana-Sakuya-hime. The shrine became a central hub for “Fuji-ko” worship and a major starting point for climbing Mount Fuji from the north. The shrine is part of the Mt. Fuji UNESCO World Cultural Heritage site, designated in 2013.
